SAT Score for Bangladesh
SAT scores for Bangladeshi students applying to US universities
Quick answer
Bangladesh is one of the fastest-growing senders of students to the US, up 17.9% in 2024/25 to a record high, but the SAT sits inside a chain of tighter bottlenecks. Only around half a dozen centers exist nationwide, all fee-paying English-medium schools in Dhaka and Chittagong; a passport is the only accepted ID; and payment usually runs through a parent's endorsed card or a bank-issued virtual card. The test costs $111 ($68 base plus the $43 international fee), with no Bangladesh surcharge and no fee waivers for students testing abroad. Several private universities including NSU and BRAC exempt strong SAT scores from their internal tests โ confirm thresholds directly. Budget a separate TOEFL or IELTS, and start the visa process early: Dhaka appointment waits were reported at 258 days.
Bangladesh is one of the fastest-growing sources of international students in the United States โ 2024/25 was its largest year on record, up 17.9% year over year, one of only twelve top-25 origin countries to hit a record high. The SAT itself is rarely the hard part of a Bangladeshi application. The binding constraints sit around it: only a handful of test centers nationwide, all of them fee-paying English-medium schools clustered in Dhaka with a couple in Chittagong; a passport as the only accepted form of ID; foreign-currency payment logistics that most secondary students cannot handle without a parent or bank; and a US visa queue in Dhaka that has been reported at 258 days. Plan the SAT as one scheduled item inside a longer chain of bottlenecks rather than as the finish line.
Who should take the SAT in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has no single national university entrance exam, so there is no one competing test to weigh the SAT against. The structure runs in three parts: the HSC school-leaving board exam, which gates all university admission; the GST cluster admission test covering 19 public general and science and technology universities, split into stream-locked units โ A for Science, B for Humanities, C for Business Studies โ that you cannot cross between; and standalone institutional tests for the biggest names, including Dhaka University, BUET and the MBBS medical admission test. The Digital SAT differs from all of them in ways that matter: it is English-medium rather than Bengali-medium, stream-agnostic rather than locked to your HSC group, offered eight times a year rather than once, retakable, and portable worldwide rather than valid only at a fixed set of domestic institutions. The SAT also has no negative marking. It is worth knowing that several leading private universities, including North South University and BRAC University, exempt applicants with strong SAT scores from their internal admission tests โ check each university's current threshold directly, as the specific numbers circulating online are not published on the universities' own admissions pages.
Common Use Cases
US undergraduate admission with significant financial aid
Target the upper half of each school's published middle-50% if you need aidThis is the dominant Bangladeshi use case, and it shapes the score you should target. There is no Bangladeshi government scholarship for undergraduate study in the US comparable to what some neighbouring markets offer, so Bangladeshi applicants are overwhelmingly funded by need-based and merit aid from the US universities themselves. Aid-seeking applicants are generally read against the stronger half of a university's admitted range rather than its midpoint, which means the score that gets you admitted and the score that gets you funded are not the same number. Work from each school's published middle-50% and aim above the median rather than at it.
Exemption from internal admission tests at Bangladeshi private universities
Confirm the current exemption threshold with each university directlySeveral leading private universities, North South and BRAC among them, waive their own entrance examination for applicants presenting a strong SAT score. This turns the SAT into a domestic credential as well as an international one and can save you a separate admission-test cycle. The thresholds quoted on third-party sites are not confirmed on the universities' own admissions pages, so treat them as a reason to enquire rather than a target to plan around โ contact the admissions office directly and ask what score exempts you this cycle.
English-medium O/A-Level and IB students already inside the system
Aligns naturally with an O/A-Level or IB timetableSAT takers in Bangladesh come overwhelmingly from the English-medium sector, which is also where every test center sits. If you are already at an O/A-Level or IB school in Dhaka or Chittagong, the SAT slots naturally alongside your existing exams and your school may host the sitting. Students from the Bengali-medium national board face a steeper path โ not academically, but logistically, since the centers, the language of the test and the surrounding advising infrastructure are all built around English-medium schooling.
Score requirements vary by program, institution, and admission round. Always verify current requirements directly with the relevant institution before registering for a test date.
How to Plan Your Preparation
Get a passport first, before anything else. Bangladesh test centers accept the passport as the only form of identification โ no other ID is admitted โ and passport issuance itself takes weeks. Confirm the current requirement on College Board's international ID page, then treat the passport as the first item on your timeline rather than an administrative detail.
Register the moment a window opens. With only around half a dozen Digital SAT centers nationwide โ American Standard International School, DPS STS School Dhaka and International School Dhaka in Dhaka, plus Chittagong Grammar School and Sunshine Grammar School and College in Chittagong โ capacity is thin, and prep providers consistently report that popular autumn dates fill quickly. Verify live availability at satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/test-center-search rather than assuming your nearest school hosts all eight sittings.
Budget $111 โ the $68 base fee plus the $43 international fee. Bangladesh is not subject to the additional $24 test-center fee, which applies only at selected centers in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. Note that SAT fee waivers are not available to non-US students testing abroad, so this is unsubsidised cash.
Sort the payment mechanism early, because it is legal but rarely straightforward. Bangladesh Bank's foreign exchange guidelines expressly permit international-card payment of examination fees for foreign admissions, and allow those without a card in their own name to pay through a bank-issued virtual card. In practice most secondary students do not hold a dual-currency card themselves โ payment typically runs through a parent's endorsed card, a bank-issued virtual card, or a coaching center paying on the student's behalf. Arrange this weeks before the deadline, not on it.
If you live outside Dhaka or Chittagong, budget for travel and an overnight stay. There are no identified centers in Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur or Barisal, so a test day for most of the country means a journey โ build that cost and the fatigue into your planning.
Plan TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test alongside the SAT, and note the budget impact: TOEFL iBT is currently $215, roughly double the SAT. If you attended an English-medium O/A-Level or IB school you may qualify for a waiver at some universities โ Bangladesh's large English-medium sector makes this more common here than in many markets โ but it is a per-university policy, so check each school.
Use EducationUSA Bangladesh, which is free and official. Advising runs from the American Center at the US Embassy in Dhaka and the Edward M. Kennedy Center in Dhanmondi, with American Corners in Chittagong and Khulna and remote advising via Rajshahi and Sylhet. Ask them directly whether the Opportunity Funds Program โ which covers test and application fees for high-achieving, low-income applicants โ is currently operating in Bangladesh, as this would materially change your cost picture.
Start the visa process as early as your admission timeline allows. F, M and J visa appointment waits in Dhaka were reported at 258 days as of March 2025, and wait times move constantly โ check travel.state.gov for the current figure. For many Bangladeshi applicants the visa queue, not the SAT, is what determines whether they start on time.
